Increase in Demodex mites at the eye lashes is common in chronic blepharitis

The normal basically harmless small Demodex hair mites at the eyelashes seem to play a role in chronic inflammation of the eyelids as their number increases with the severity of disease.

In case of persistent blepharitis, watch out for Demodex mite infestation

If chronic eyelid inflammation persists despite regular cleaning and care of the eyelids, it may make sense to carry out a therapy to reduce the demodex mites.

Your ophthalmologist can prove the presence of Demodex mites and can give advice.

Therapy options :

  • Tea tree oil and its active ingredients are often recommended.

  • Ready-made sterile cleaning wipes, soaked with the active ingredient, are available for direct cleaning of the eyelid rim and eyelashes.

  • Cleaning foam that contains the tea oil extracts in different concentrations is also available.

  • The treatment takes the form of a cure, in which the cleaning is repeated once or twice every day for a few weeks until the symptoms improve.
